To thine own self be true. - William Shakespeare
The 2020-21 school year will be my 25th year of teaching and my 24rd year at Owen Valley High School. I currently teach sophomore English.
Sophomore English exposes students to diverse literature selections and students complete various types of writing assignments. Students’ progress is carefully assessed and monitored through the NWEA (Northwest Evaluation Association) assessments. Students’ strengths are identified and deficiencies addressed in relation to projected ACT and SAT test scores.
There are two types of assignments in English classes at Owen Valley High School. The first is formative assessments. Formative assessments are smaller “lead up” activities that could be classwork or homework. Formative assessments usually do not take multiple days to complete. There will be many formative assessments in each English class. Late formative assessments are only accepted within the teaching unit and will receive half credit. The second type of assessment is summative. Summative assessments are large, multi-step, multi-day, end of unit assignments. Summative assessments include unit tests, papers, or projects. All summative assessments must be turned in and receive a passing grade in order for student to pass particular English class. Late summative assessments will be accepted during the class for 70% credit. Grading Scale 45% term 1/ 45% term 2/ 10% final exam.
I am available through my school email at theckman@socs.k12.in.us and school phone/voicemail at (812)829-2266 ext. 323. I will respond to emails and voicemails as soon as possible. I utilize Canvas in the classroom to post and explain all assignments. Canvas along with PowerSchool are used as the grade book.
